The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction was set up to provide the Community and its Member States with 'objective, reliable and comparable information at European level concerning drugs and drug addiction and their consequences'.

The statistical, documentary and technical information processed or produced by the Centre contributs to provide its audience with an overall picture of the drugs phenomenon in Europe.

The work of the EMCDDA extends beyond its headquarters in Lisbon to a network of Focal Points set up in all EU Member States and the European Commission.
Together these information collection and exchange points form REITOX, the European Information Network on Drugs and Drug Addiction.
In order to fulfill its mission the EMCDDA relies on a human and telematic network. The European Information Network on drugs and drug addiction REITOX exchanges data on drugs in Europe. REITOX links the information systems of all national EMCDDA focal points and other key partners.

The EMCDDA's main tasks are:

Collecting and analysing existing data
Improving data-comparison methods
Disseminating data and information
Co-operating with European Union institutions, international partners and with non-EU countries
